For white Burgundy 2017 was a particularly happy vintage: finally generous crops, healthy fruit and well-preserved freshness, giving pure, luminous and highly enjoyable wines. Coche-Dury's Meursault 2017 is an exemplary expression of the year: lemon, pear, hawthorn, almond and a smoky flint note, on a taut, juicy palate with minerality that extends the finish. Wine Advocate rated it 93 points. Already splendid to drink, it has the structure to evolve for a few more years, acquiring nuances of toasted hazelnut and butter. It is a natural partner for lobster or turbot.
The producer · Domaine Coche-Dury
Domaine Coche-Dury in Meursault is considered by many to be the greatest white wine producer in Burgundy, a name that among collectors evokes rarity and perfection. Its history goes back to the early twentieth century, but it was under Jean-François Coche, who in the 1970s joined his surname to that of his wife Odile Dury, that the domaine became legendary. Since 2010 it has been run by his son Raphaël, who continues the style with the same discretion. The domaine owns just over ten hectares, almost all around Meursault, with Premier Cru parcels such as Perrières and Genevrières and the celebrated Corton-Charlemagne, along with reds from Volnay, Monthelie and Auxey-Duresses. The secret lies above all in the vineyard: meticulous work, restrained yields and perfectly healthy fruit. In the cellar the wines age at length on their lees, with measured use of new oak. The result is Chardonnay of extraordinary tension and precision, with the signature flinty note, capable of ageing magnificently.
