2019 in Bordeaux was warm and dry, with summer heatwaves tempered by cool nights; the result was concentrated yet fresh wines of great balance, among the finest of recent decades in the Médoc. Léoville-Las Cases 2019 is a Saint-Julien of extraordinary purity: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, graphite, blond tobacco and floral notes, on a deep, silky palate of great tension, with very fine tannins and remarkable persistence. Robert Parker rated it 98 points and Jancis Robinson 19/20. Already captivating, it is destined for a long and noble evolution in the cellar, rewarding patience.
The producer · Château Léoville-Las Cases
Château Léoville-Las Cases is one of the great names of Saint-Julien and the Médoc. It descends from the old Léoville estate, one of the largest in the region in the eighteenth century, which was divided after the Revolution into three separate properties: Las Cases, Poyferré and Barton. Ranked a Second Growth in 1855, Léoville-Las Cases has long been regarded as the leader of the so-called super seconds, with a quality that regularly brings it close to the First Growths. The estate belongs to the Delon family, at its helm since the first half of the twentieth century: Michel Delon built its modern reputation with legendary rigour, continued today by his son Jean-Hubert. The heart of the property is the Grand Clos, a walled vineyard pictured on the label with its famous lion gateway, which borders Château Latour on gravel and clay soils close to the Gironde estuary. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, completed by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wines are dense, precise and austere in youth, and famed for their extraordinary ageing potential.
