In the Médoc 2018 was a year of contrasts: after rainy spring months that encouraged mildew came a hot, dry, bright summer that gave rich, concentrated wines with generous fruit, yet in Saint-Julien often with surprising freshness too. Léoville Barton 2018 combines that opulence with the house's classical rigour: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, cedar, graphite and spice on the nose; a full palate with abundant yet polished tannins and a long, mineral, Cabernet-driven finish. A wine of great structure, it can already be appreciated for the purity of its fruit, but can be cellared for many years and will improve with time.
The producer · Château Léoville Barton
Château Léoville Barton is one of the great names of Saint-Julien and a Second Growth in the famous 1855 classification. Born from the division of the vast historic Léoville estate, the vineyard was bought in 1826 by Hugh Barton, from an Anglo-Irish négociant family active in Bordeaux since the eighteenth century, who had acquired neighbouring Château Langoa Barton a few years earlier. The property has remained in the same family ever since, a rarity in the Médoc: after the long, charismatic tenure of Anthony Barton, the reins passed to his daughter Lilian Barton-Sartorius, and today her children are also involved. The vineyards, on deep gravel overlooking the Gironde, are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, completed by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the wine is made in the Langoa cellars. The style is classic Saint-Julien: structure, elegance, black fruit and cedar, fine tannins and remarkable ageing capacity, always independent of fashion and true to its identity.
