The wine in this vintage

Brovia's "classic" Barolo comes 70-80% from the Brea cru in Serralunga d'Alba, with the rest from vines over 50 years old in Rocche di Castiglione, Villero and Garblet Suè, in Castiglione Falletto. After 24-30 months in large oak casks and a further year of blending, it is bottled no sooner than 40 months after the harvest. 2017 was a warm, dry vintage in the Langhe, giving a floral, medium-bodied Barolo with generous fruit and already supple tannins. It is enjoyable now and can keep evolving for several more years.

The producer · Brovia

Brovia is one of the historic families of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo district. The estate dates back to 1863, when Giacinto Brovia began making wine from his own vineyards. Phylloxera, economic crises and two wars halted production for nearly thirty years, until in 1953 his grandsons Giacinto, an oenologist, and Raffaele, an agronomist, brought it back to full scale. Today the estate is run by the fourth generation: Elena Brovia, Giacinto's daughter, with her husband Alex Sanchez. Its 19 hectares include plots in some of Barolo's most celebrated crus: Rocche di Castiglione, Villero and Garblet Suè in Castiglione Falletto, and Brea in Serralunga d'Alba. The style is classic: spontaneous fermentations in concrete, wood and steel, ageing in large oak casks and no concession to barriques. The result is Barolo of great precision and transparency, elegant even in youth and able to age for a long time, highly regarded by Langhe enthusiasts and collectors.
