Few recent Tuscan vintages have been as challenging as 2014: a cool, rainy summer, slow ripening and rigorous selection in the vineyard were essential. Yet it is precisely in such years that great sites show their quality. Solaia 2014 is a measured wine, lighter and more airy than the warm vintages, with red and black currant, tobacco leaf, floral notes and a spicy streak. The palate is fresh and flowing, with fine tannins and a clean finish. Robert Parker rated it 95 points, a sign of a surprisingly successful interpretation. It is in a pleasantly balanced phase now and can be enjoyed or kept for several more years.
The producer · Antinori
The Antinori family has been making wine in Tuscany since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine guild of vintners. Over more than twenty-six generations, a Florentine merchant house has become one of the most influential wine families in the world, today led by Marchese Piero Antinori and his daughters Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Its symbolic heart is the Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico, between the Greve and Pesa valleys, where south-west-facing slopes of galestro and alberese soils sit at roughly 350 to 400 metres. Two wines that reshaped Italian winemaking come from here. Tignanello, first made in 1971, was among the earliest Tuscan reds to pair Sangiovese with Bordeaux varieties and to be aged in small French barrels, effectively launching the Super Tuscan era. Solaia, first released with the 1978 vintage from the neighbouring vineyard of the same name, is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led red of remarkable depth and longevity. Both express the house style: precision, elegance and a clear sense of place, backed by relentless research in vineyard and cellar.
