In the Maremma 2019 was a balanced vintage, with a cool, wet spring that slowed the cycle and a warm but breezy summer that allowed healthy, ripe grapes with good freshness to be picked. Rocca di Frassinello's Baffonero 2019, a pure Merlot from a selected vineyard on the estate, interprets the year with elegance: plum, blackberry, black cherry, cocoa, sweet spice and a hint of Mediterranean scrub, on a silky, enveloping palate with fine tannins. Antonio Galloni awarded it 95 points. Already enjoyable today, it can be kept for many more years.

Rocca di Frassinello is one of the most original estates in Tuscany's Maremma. It was born in the early 2000s in Gavorrano, in the province of Grosseto, from a meeting between Paolo Panerai, publisher and already owner of Castellare di Castellina in Chianti Classico, and Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite): an Italian-French collaboration designed to bring Sangiovese into dialogue with the great Bordeaux varieties. The estate's symbol is the winery designed by Renzo Piano, with its amphitheatre-shaped barrel cellar topped by a panoramic tower, now an icon of wine architecture. The vineyards spread over the hills between Gavorrano and Roccastrada, a few kilometres from the sea, on stony, mineral-rich soils, with a Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes. Alongside Sangiovese wines and Bordeaux blends, the estate produces Baffonero, a pure Merlot that has become its flagship. The style aims to marry the generosity of the Maremma sun with elegance and finesse.
